The Vøring Margin is an old volcanic margin with numerous volcanic extrusions and intrusions. Most of the intrusions are dykes and sills. Both affect the thermal history of the associated areas and, in particular, the maturity of the hydrocarbons. Some of the sills form clusters and, if generated over geologically short times, may have had very great effects of the thermal evolution of the surrounding rocks. Furthermore, sills and dykes may contribute to the formation of reservoirs, not only be generating dense rocks that may act as seals for the migration of hydrocarbons, but also as reservoirs. This latter applies particularly to thick and extensive sills that may, due to columnar jointing, form fracture-porosity reservoirs with high porosity. Sill emplacement in layered rocks may also induce stresses in stiff layers far away from the sill itself, stresses that may result in fracture development and reservoir formation.
