Lawrence M. Cathles is professor at Cornell University, N.Y., USA. His doctoral research was on the viscosity of the Earth's mantle from post-glacial uplift. He has also been conducting modeling studies related to hydrocarbon maturation in the Gulf Coast Sedimentary Basin.

Dr. Cathles is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of several professional societies. He has also served on committees of the National Research Council, is a past associate editor of Economic Geology and the manager of the Global Basins Research Network.
