Agust Gudmundsson is professor of structural geology at Royal Holloway, University of London. He holds a PhD in Tectonophysics from the University of London (1984), and has been a Research scientist and professor at the University of Iceland (1985-1997), a professor at the University of Bergen (1998-2002), and more recently a professor (Chair) at the Department of Structural Geology and Geodynamics, Geoscience Centre, University of Göttingen (2003-2007).

His main research is within the general fields of volcanotectonics, seismotectonics, and fluid transport in rock fractures and reservoirs. He has extensive experience of field, analytical, and numerical studies of fractures and faults in fluid-filled reservoirs of various kind. These include reservoirs of ground water, geothermal water, magma, oil, and gas. In particular, he has made numerical studies of the initiation and development of fault zones, magma chambers, dykes, collapse calderas, and fluid-filled reservoirs.
